Get Ready to Glow! The Ultimate Guide to Nailing Your First Maternity Photoshoot
Hey mama! First of all, huge congratulations! Pregnancy is such an incredible time, and if you’re planning a maternity photoshoot, I’m so excited for you. These sessions are all about capturing the magic of your pregnancy—celebrating your journey, your glow, and the excitement of what’s to come.
But I totally get it—pregnancy can feel like a whirlwind, and you might be wondering, “How do I even start preparing for a maternity shoot?” Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! As a maternity photographer in Central Florida, I’ve worked with so many expecting mamas, and I’m here to make sure your session is as relaxed and fun as possible. Let’s dive into some tips to help you feel ready and confident for your big day.
1. When’s the Best Time for Your Maternity Shoot?
Timing is key! The sweet spot for a maternity session is usually around 28 to 34 weeks. By then, your belly has that beautiful round shape, but you’re still comfortable enough to move around. Of course, every pregnancy is different, so listen to your body. If you’re showing earlier or carrying multiples, you might want to schedule your session a little earlier. Whatever feels right for you! This is something we can discuss together and keep in contact over. If you choose to bring your photoshoot forward or delay it by a few weeks, I’m totally flexible.
2. Find a Photographer You Connect With
You want to find someone who gets you—someone who can capture your unique vibe and make you feel amazing in front of the camera. A photographer experienced in maternity shoots will know the best poses and how to highlight that pregnancy glow in the most natural way. And since we’re in Central Florida, it’s important they know the area too! From dreamy beach settings to gorgeous parks, your photographer should help you pick the perfect spot that fits your vision.
3. Pick a Stunning Location
Speaking of location, Central Florida has some seriously beautiful places for your maternity shoot. Want a beachy, golden-hour vibe? Think driving to the coast for sunrise or sunset. If driving to the coast sounds like too much, there’s a beautiful beachfront at Saint Cloud Lakefront. I will include an example below. Prefer something a little more intimate and lush? The oak trees draped in Spanish moss at places like Kraft Azalea Garden or Lake Runnymede Conservation Area make for a stunning backdrop.
If you’re more into cozy, in-home vibes, that works too! There’s something so personal about a shoot in your own space—maybe in the nursery or just lounging with your feet up. It’s all about what makes you feel comfortable and happy.
4. What to Wear
Now, let’s talk outfits! One of my go-to tips is to wear something that flows and flatters. Long, flowing dresses are always a hit—they create such a dreamy, soft look in photos. I love chiffon and silk fabrics because they have that perfect balance of movement and elegance. Neutrals, pastels, and soft earthy tones always look amazing, but if you love bold colors, don’t be afraid to show off your personality.
Form-fitting dresses that show off your belly can also be stunning if you want something a little more modern and chic. And hey, don’t forget the accessories! A flower crown, a hat, or some delicate jewelry can add a nice touch—just keep it simple so you and that beautiful bump stay the focus.
Not every female out there feels comfortable in a dress (Me included) and that’s okay. Wear whatever you feel confident in.
5. Hair and Makeup: Go All Out
If there was ever a time to pamper yourself, this is it! Treat yourself to professional hair and makeup. It can really boost your confidence and help you feel extra radiant during your shoot. Go for soft, natural makeup that enhances your features, and hair that you feel comfortable in—whether that’s loose waves or a sleek updo.
Most of us Florida girls know how tricky our humidity can be, so working with a local makeup artist who understands the climate is a bonus. Your photographer might have some great recommendations!
6. Stay Hydrated & Bring Comfort Essentials
This is super important, especially with our Florida heat. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Bring a water bottle and maybe some light snacks to keep your energy up during the shoot. Depending on the location and weather, you’ll also want to wear comfy shoes, so you’re not worrying about blisters while we’re finding the perfect spots.
7. Bring the Family or Your Partner
While this shoot is all about you and your bump, it’s always sweet to include your partner, older kids, or even fur babies! Capturing those intimate, emotional moments with the people you love most can add so much depth to your photos. Think of it as telling the story of your growing family. The more the merrier. I do not charge extra for additional guests.
8. Find inspiration through Pinterest
Pinterest is a really cool app for all your inspirational needs. I use this app from time to time when I’m struggling to think of posing or location ideas.
9. Relax & Trust the Process
I know pregnancy can make you feel a bit self-conscious at times (hello, fluctuating body changes), but trust me, you are absolutely stunning. I always tell my clients to relax and let me guide them through the process. I’ll find the best angles and light to showcase your natural beauty. A maternity shoot isn’t about perfect posing; it’s about capturing your real emotions and the connection between you and your baby. Trust me—you’ll look amazing.
10. Enjoy the Moment
At the end of the day, the most important thing is to have fun! Your maternity session should feel like a celebration of this incredible journey you’re on. Don’t stress about every little detail—just focus on enjoying the experience, feeling beautiful, and connecting with your growing baby. The best photos happen when you’re relaxed and in the moment.
